Saif Ali Khan On Competition In Bollywood: 'I’m Way More Successful Than I Thought I’d Ever Be; And I’m Just Happy'
Saif Ali Khan, in a recent interview, expressed his views about the competition in Bollywood and also spoke about his career choices.
Saif Ali Khan, despite hailing from a film family, has witnessed his fair share of struggle in the Hindi film industry. In a career spanning nearly three decades, the actor has refined his film choices with every passing year and every release being further diverse than his previous one. The actor has demonstrated how he could play the spoiled playboy in Yeh Dillagi and the dark antagonist in Ek Hasina Thi with equal ease. Throw in the Sid of Dil Chahta Hai, Go Goa Gone’s Boris or Sacred Games’ Sartaj Singh and you get an actor who is hard to put in a box.
Saif Ali Khan belongs to the era of the Khans, but his path has been vastly different from theirs, given the numerous fluctuations he has seen in his career. The actor, however, is not bothered by any of it.
Saif, in a recent interview with IndianExpress.com, also expressed his views about being tagged a “superstar” and shared his interpretation of the word. “My parents were superstars but they didn’t behave like that. And it’s very easy to take yourself too seriously, whether it’s about having a bunch of bodyguards around or that vibe. You can’t blame somebody who doesn’t know any better. You just don’t have to get carried away by success," he said.
Referring to the competition, Saif said, “I’ve never seen the point of doing that. I’m way more successful than I thought I’d ever be. And I’m just happy.”
Talking about how he was open to doing third-lead films in the past, Saif said, “Dil Chahta Hai was the third lead. You never know what people will like. I see those songs which Katrina (Kaif) and I did. You have a different energy in your 30s and luckily it worked out. I wanted to do Omkara and things like this. Now the choices are doing something commercial and interesting, along with finding a reality in the performance. Just have the clarity whether you can carry an entire film or not and be brave to choose a path.”
Saif Ali Khan’s career has witnessed a jaw-dropping dropping boost in the past few years considering the quality of cinema he has been associated with. These include projects as varied as Go Goa Gone, Kaalakaandi, Laal Kaptaan, and his recent hit Bhoot Police. The versatile actor claims to be at a position in his career where he can afford to play characters “as crazily and interestingly” as he can without any fear.
In another interview with Sidharth Kannan, Saif described the top qualities of all three superstars - Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan, and shared how he is different from them.
"Salman has been a superstar from the first shot he gave and he has just never looked back. Ups and downs or whatever, but his mind is very different. It has taken me a long time to grow up into a person who is capable of shouldering a movie," he said.
About Shah Rukh Khan, he stated, "Very wide-sweeping scale of how he sees the world. I am really like a fish-n-chips guy compared to him. He is like an emperor."
And about his Dil Chahta Hai co-star, Aamir Khan, Saif said, "Five years later, I kind of understand what he is talking about in terms of how he is applying his mind. I become roughly like that, much later."
Saif Ali Khan will next be seen in Bunty Aur Babli 2, co-starring Rani Mukerji, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Sharvari Wagh.
